Derek Martinez
Piano / Guitar / Bass / Drums / Songwriting / Rock Ensembles
Monday - Friday
Derek earned his bachelor's degree at the USC Thornton School of Music and has 13 years of teaching experience; he began teaching here in the summer of 2010. His fun and light approach to music inspires kids to have fun while learning. Music lessons emphasize theory and technique, and Derek includes music of his students' choosing, tailored to their skill level. During his tenure at the Center, Derek has taken pride in bringing music students together to share the magic of music in the form of ensembles (some of which have performed at recitals, movie premieres, and even on live TV). He constantly encourages his students to express themselves through music and it is a great source of joy to help them create their own musical masterpieces.
Derek has performed with SAMMIE-winning hip-hop/rock band The Shades of Gray (lead guitar), Blue Surround (vocals, guitar and bass) and the acoustic trio Zoo Human Project (songwriter, vocals and guitar). He also plays percussion for many singer-songwriters and hip-hop poets locally. His discography includes PileUP (solo album), "Acoustiversions" (solo EP), "Innominata" and "Naissance" (with the Zoo Human Project), and "To Be Determined" (with The Shades of Gray). He also has extensive sound recording experience spanning both music and film--doing location recording, music supervision and post-production (ADR, foley, audio effects, dialog editing and mixing) for several movies produced in Los Angeles.
